Some vacation rentals begin as investments. High Hopes Cabin began with a search for a mountain home we would genuinely want to live in, return to, and share with our own family and friends.
For years, we looked for a mountain home in the Asheville and Western North Carolina area. We toured beautiful properties, but many came with a compromise we weren’t willing to make. Some required driving narrow, single-lane switchback roads that demanded nerves of steel. Others were so far off the beaten path that even picking up groceries or going out to dinner meant a significant drive.
Then we found the cabin that would become High Hopes Cabin.
From the first drive up, it felt different.
Today, guests can explore High Hopes Cabin and its amenities for themselves, but the reasons we chose this cabin are still the same qualities we believe make it such a special place to stay in Maggie Valley.
We Wanted Mountain Elevation Without Giving Up Easy Access
One of the first things that impressed us was the combination of approximately 4,000 feet of elevation and relatively easy access.
Part of the appeal of visiting the North Carolina mountains is actually feeling as though you’re in the mountains. We wanted trees, cooler mountain air, changing seasons, views and a sense of separation from everyday life.
But we didn’t want every trip to and from the cabin to feel like an expedition.
High Hopes Cabin gave us both.
The cabin sits at roughly 4,000 feet in Maggie Valley, yet it is only minutes from the town center. The property also has ample on-site parking and an easy-in, easy-out driveway.

We Fell in Love Before We Even Walked Inside
We still remember arriving for the first time.
There was a large parking area, but what caught our attention was beyond it: a real log cabin with a wraparound deck tucked into a lush green forest.
It felt like we were going back in time.
Before we had even entered the cabin, we could hear water. A small mountain stream runs alongside the front porch, while the sound of the lower creek adds another layer to the setting.
That was something photographs couldn’t fully explain.
Mountain views are beautiful, but sound changes the experience. Sitting outside while hearing moving water gives the property a peaceful character that is difficult to manufacture.
It was one of the details that immediately made us think, this place is different.
The Stream Became One of Our Favorite Features
The stream wasn’t simply something we could see from a window. It runs beside the porch and has become part of the everyday High Hopes Cabin experience. The Little Bridge Showed Us What the Cabin Could Become
Another feature caught our imagination immediately: a small bridge arching over the stream to an open area beside the cabin.
At the time, we saw potential.
Today, that area has become a comfortable place for family and friends to gather around the outdoor fire pit.
It’s one of our favorite examples of how we’ve approached the cabin since purchasing it. We haven’t tried to turn High Hopes into something it isn’t. Instead, we’ve tried to enhance the features that made us fall in love with it in the first place.
The fire-pit area makes use of the forest and stream setting that were already there.
It’s a place for conversation, relaxing after dinner, telling stories and making s’mores. Most importantly, it gives guests another reason to enjoy the property itself instead of treating the cabin as merely somewhere to sleep.
Then We Saw the Hot Tub
The private hot tub on the front deck was another feature we immediately pictured ourselves using.
It overlooks the natural setting near the stream and creates a completely different experience depending on the season.
After hiking or exploring waterfalls, it’s a place to relax tired muscles. On a cool evening, the contrast between mountain air and warm water is hard to beat.
For couples, it can be part of a quiet romantic getaway. For families and friends, it’s another place to unwind together after a full day.

Inside, We Wanted a Cabin to Feel Like a Cabin
The outside setting won us over first, but the interior mattered just as much.
High Hopes Cabin is an authentic log cabin, not a conventional house decorated to look vaguely rustic.
The living room centers around a stone gas fireplace, creating the kind of space we pictured when we imagined owning a mountain home. It’s especially enjoyable on cool fall evenings and winter days when staying inside can be just as appealing as going out.

Maggie Valley itself has the relaxed personality we were looking for. It is a small mountain town with local restaurants, attractions and events, while also being centrally positioned for exploring much more of Western North Carolina.
That central location has become one of the biggest reasons we recommend using High Hopes Cabin as a home base rather than changing accommodations every time you want to see another part of the mountains.
