We usually start the morning at High Hopes Cabin. Our daughter goes for the espresso while my wife and I attack the drip coffee maker. But somewhere during one of our day trips, we’re usually ready for an afternoon pick-me-up—and that gives us an excuse to look for a favorite coffee shop or discover a new one.
Over the years, we’ve stopped for coffee throughout Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Asheville and other Western North Carolina mountain towns. Some places are perfect for grabbing a cup before heading back onto the road. Others make you want to sit down, slow down and stay awhile.
And one of those has become a particular favorite of ours: Panacea CoffeeHouse, Café & Roastery in Waynesville.

That’s one of the things we enjoy about traveling through Western North Carolina. Independent coffee shops give you another reason to get off the main route, meet local people, explore a neighborhood and spend a little more time in a mountain town.

Organic Beans Coffee Co. is right on Soco Road in Maggie Valley and has been one of our local coffee stops for years.
The shop focuses on organic coffee and espresso drinks and also offers Swiss-water decaf. A drive-through makes it particularly convenient when you’re starting a day trip and don’t want to spend much time getting back on the road.
For guests staying at High Hopes Cabin, this is the kind of place that works naturally before a day of sightseeing.
Grab a coffee and head toward Cherokee, the Blue Ridge Parkway, a waterfall hike or whatever else you have planned.

2. Sippers in the Valley — Maggie Valley
Sippers in the Valley is another Soco Road favorite and has a different personality from Organic Beans.
Sippers combines coffee and espresso drinks with a large variety of flavors, plus pastries and sweet treats. It’s a good option when different people in your group want very different things.
Some people want straightforward coffee. Others want a flavored latte, chai, matcha or something sweeter.
Sippers gives you plenty to choose from.
It’s also exactly the kind of locally owned place we like including in our recommendations rather than sending every guest to the same national chains they can visit at home.
Best for: Specialty drinks, flavored coffee, pastries and a casual Maggie Valley coffee stop.
3. Lucky Girl Coffee — Maggie Valley
Lucky Girl Coffee is a newer addition to Maggie Valley’s coffee scene and gives visitors another independent option directly on Soco Road.
The shop has developed a reputation for friendly service and carefully made espresso drinks, with both classic coffee choices and flavored options.
Having another dedicated coffee shop in Maggie Valley is good news for visitors. It means you can try a different place on different mornings instead of driving into Waynesville every time you want something beyond the cabin coffee pot.

Our Personal Favorite in Waynesville: Panacea CoffeeHouse
Panacea CoffeeHouse, Café & Roastery has become one of our favorite spots.
Panacea is located in Waynesville’s Frog Level neighborhood in a historic warehouse-style building, and the setting is a big part of why we enjoy it. They roast coffee on site and serve espresso drinks, brewed coffee and food, but Panacea is more than somewhere to run in, buy coffee and leave.
One of our favorite features is the dog-friendly outdoor seating beside Richland Creek, surrounded by trees. On a pleasant Western North Carolina day, sitting outside by the water with a cup of coffee is hard to beat.
That’s why Panacea fits our kind of mountain trip so well.
We’re usually not trying to race from attraction to attraction. A good vacation needs places where you can slow down for a while.
For us, Panacea has become one of those places.
Why We Like Panacea
There are plenty of places where you can get a good cup of coffee.
What makes a coffee shop memorable is usually the combination of the coffee, atmosphere and location.
Panacea gives you all three.
It’s also convenient to combine with exploring Waynesville. You can stop for coffee, walk around Frog Level, continue toward downtown, shop, have lunch or simply make Panacea the relaxing part of an otherwise busy day.
Our take: If you’re staying at High Hopes Cabin and only have time to try one coffee shop outside Maggie Valley, Panacea would be high on our list because it has become one of our own favorite stops.
Best for: Coffee with atmosphere, lingering by the creek, breakfast or lunch, and pairing with a Waynesville outing.
Orchard Coffee — Downtown Waynesville
Orchard Coffee is another excellent reason for coffee lovers to visit Waynesville.
Located on Depot Street, Orchard has built a strong reputation for specialty coffee, espresso and latte art, along with baked goods and breakfast options.
This is a good choice when your plans center on downtown Waynesville and you want a more specialty-coffee-focused experience.
Orchard and Panacea aren’t interchangeable.
That’s a good thing.
Panacea is a place we especially enjoy for its relaxed Frog Level setting and creekside atmosphere. Orchard makes sense when you want excellent specialty coffee as part of exploring downtown Waynesville.
Best for: Specialty coffee, espresso, latte art, baked goods and a downtown Waynesville morning.
Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters — Hazelwood
Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters in the Hazelwood area of Waynesville offers another type of coffee experience.
As the name suggests, roasting is central to the business. This is a particularly useful stop if you enjoy buying beans to take back to the cabin—or home after your vacation.
Hazelwood itself is also worth knowing about. It’s a different part of Waynesville from Main Street and Frog Level, so stopping here gives you another reason to explore beyond the most obvious tourist route.
Best for: Locally roasted beans, traditional coffee-shop drinks and visitors who like bringing coffee home.
Coffee and a Waynesville Day Trip
Waynesville is close enough to Maggie Valley that you don’t need to treat it as a major excursion.

The point isn’t to visit three coffee shops in one afternoon—although serious coffee lovers might disagree.
It’s to use these locally owned places as part of experiencing the communities around Maggie Valley.

If you’re heading for the Blue Ridge Parkway, grabbing coffee before you leave Maggie Valley makes an easy start to the morning.

Remember that services directly along scenic mountain routes can be limited and seasonal. It’s smart to begin with fuel in the vehicle, water, snacks—and, in our case, coffee.

A waterfall day is another perfect coffee day.
Pick up a drink before heading toward one of the area’s waterfall routes, then spend the morning exploring.
Western North Carolina has waterfalls ranging from roadside-accessible stops to destinations requiring more substantial hikes.
Our advice is the same for coffee as it is for waterfalls: don’t try to cram every possible stop into one day.
Choose a few good ones and enjoy them.

If you’re planning a trip toward Cataloochee Valley, coffee can be part of the preparation.
Elk viewing is often most productive during the cooler portions of the day, so an early start can make sense.
